A Beautiful Move

Two posts in one week! What's gotten into me?! Paint paint paint.

This mural is on a wall of a carport at a private home here in Portland. During our initial consultation, I took some notes on this couple's vision: Portland. Roses. Texas and Wisconsin wildflowers. Sasquatch. Rivers. Trees. Rocks. That's basically what I had to go on, combined with the fact that the two halves of my client couple were from Texas and Wisconsin, had just moved to Portland, and like it here. This is the best case scenario for a consultation: tell me a few of your favorite things, and tell me a little of your story. Then let me go cray.

This fam totally gave me the warm and fuzzies, with their two adorable kids under 5, sweet standard poodle, and general hospitality. The cutest was when one kiddo came and showed me her art projects after school, and sat and drew with me while I painted. Makes me miss teaching kids art like WOAH.

Since the wall we were working with was very long and not very tall, I thought it would work great as sort of a timeline/whimsical landscape. I started on the far left side with the state flowers from Texas and Wisconsin, and ended at the far right with a skyline of Portland and some roses (we're known as the City of Roses here). I added a little Mt. Hood action too (our grand mountain that is just as much a part of our skyline here as our skyscrapers....well, I use the word skyscrapers loosely). All in all, it represents a move to Portland. And not to get too woo, but it feels like a good way of honoring a life change. Here are the pictures from right to left. Full mural at the bottom of this post.

Yay cute kids. Yay paint. Yay coral and aqua together. Yay purple mountain majesty. Yay Oregon. Yay trees. Yay this frickin job I get to do. :)

Columbia River Gorge Painting

Hey everyone! Happy Saturday!

I've been on a total painting bender the last little while here, and man does it feel good. Most of the time it feels good, at least. I just saw a friend post about her creative painting process, and it got me thinking about how I could explain my own. When my immediate family or boyfriend knows I'm out painting a mural, they will text me to ask how it's going. Depending on how far into it I am, I am either like, "GREAT! :) I LOVE PAINTING SO MUCH heart-eyes-emoticons-for-days" or... "meh. ok" (which really means: "I hate this mess I've made on someone's wall right now SO HARD.") I've done this job for long enough now though, that I've figured out my own mural-painting-feelings roller coaster. I know that the entire first day of painting, I will despise what I've made by the end of that day. I know that 5 hours of straight painting without breaks is about my limit if I want to maximize my optimal creative brainpower. Because after 5 hours, what I've been staring at starts to mush together, and I can no longer come up with visual solutions to all the problems I'm seeing. I have to leave the problems, exposed to my clients and the rest of the world (if it's an exterior mural), overnight or potentially for days. Which is the worst part. I tell clients after my first day of painting, PLEASE DO NOT JUDGE THIS YET..... or better yet, don't even LOOK at it! But the second and third (often final) days, are the recovery. The answers to yesterdays' problems seem to come to me with a good night's sleep. The final layers come so much easier. I can play with temperature glazes and exaggerated values. And the very last flicks of the lightest highlights, which is the part that always gives me a stupid-happy rush of endorphins. It just feels GOOD.

These stages repeat themselves almost every single time. With the awareness of that, comes trust in myself and my process. I know I will hate it the first day. But I have experienced that discouragement enough times, that I know it will pass. Painting is sometimes hard and frustrating but it also makes me indescribably happy. I feel like every kind of artist on this planet can probably relate to that last sentence. Happy creating, you guys! :)

Oh...this is what I made last week: 6' x 2.5' CANVAS, not wall. Switching it up! ;) It's the Columbia River Gorge... a view from Hood River, looking back towards Portland. Ahh so luck to live here.

Happy clients, happy artist!.... but it's not a mural, bro. ;) So sweet. :)

Annnnnnnd.... here's a teeny tiny peek at what's to come. I finished this mural this morning, and will post final pictures next week. I'll tell you all about that one next. Couldn't resist taking a selfie with the roses part of this one.... because HOT PINK! ;)

A Garden for Winter

Hey Everyone!

I finished up this new mural last week, but was waiting for better pictures before posting. The whole sun-dappled thing is nice, but its not cute when it's on the mural you're trying to photograph. Luckily, the mural-owners snapped these while it was perfect light :)

Would you be so bold as to allow me to paint directly onto the outside of your house? These clients were! And they gave me a lot of freedom with the design, too. The purpose was to have this garden area bright and beautiful year-round, even in the winter when all the plants in front of it have died. And BRIGHT it is! Hooray for bold and brave clients. So much fun!! And technical note to self: painting directly onto wood siding was nothing to be worried about. Can. not. wait. to do this to my own house someday. Only, potentially on the ENTIRE outside and inside. Oh hey, future neighbors ;)

Happy weekend!

Sunnies in Progress

Hey everyone!

While I usually wait until I'm done with a project to post it here, I thought I would share a little in-progress action, just to keep up the blog momentum. My last two commissions have been small (in my world at least) works on 4 x 5'-ish panels. After those, I worked on fixing up a mural that another artist made in someone's home. I was also out of town for 3 weekends in August. All that leads to not having had a wall all to myself in quite a few weeks. So my current project just feels really, really good to work on.... I needed a wall fix! There really is just something about painting BIG BIG BIG that is like a drug to me. The bolder, the brighter, the better. This wall most definitely qualifies as bold and BRIGHT! Here's what I instagrammed the first day:

That bottom picture is my photoshopped sketch proposal. Except I'll be swapping out some hummingbirds for those butterflies. :)

That was after day 1.

This was yesterday's progress. I probably would have gotten farther along, had it not been for an end-of-summer heat wave we've got going here in Portland. It was hot hot hot and I was trying to hide on the shady left side the whole time. This photo makes it hard to see all the bright purples in the shadow areas, but that was the last thing I did to it, and my current favorite part about it. Can't wait to get back to the wall! Stay tuned - I'll post when it's finished.

Getting my head and hands back in the wall-painting game, combined with meeting with a realtor this week, has got me dreaming sweet homeowner dreams.  I know that my future home will be full of murals.... but how will I ever decide where to start when it's my OWN home I'm working on, and the client is ME?! Something like this might be in order. Whatever it is, it's gonna be BRIGHT and BOLD. :) Can't wait.
Happy weekend everyone!

Warm and Fuzzy: Positivity Board!

Hey everyone!

Happy weekend! Mine has been really epic already and it's only 12:30 pm on Saturday. Last night I went to see Michael Franti & Spearhead with my cute man friend and it was SO. GOOD. Michael Franti concerts are all about spreading messages of hope and change and filling up people's hearts (cheese factory, I know. But it's true!) He was wearing a shirt that said "Eat, sleep, hug, kiss, dance, change the world, repeat." A man whose music is full of good vibes, and whose concerts are even more full of them. He reminds people to stay positive, open, hopeful and loving.

This lil tiny "mural" project was a lil tiny version of that - a reminder. A co-worker's daughter requested a "diva board" for her birthday. The "diva board" is something that a character from a TV show has above her bed.  But this kiddo re-named hers, a "positivity board", which I like a lot better too. Just a quick, cute, birthday gift I was happy to help out with. You go, girl. Shine.

Pretty Lady in a Forest

Hey everyone!

Coming at you from sunny San Francisco! (Yes, I said sunny. It's gorgeous here - no fog in sight!)  I'm here visiting my sister with my parents. Great to get in some family time, and check out the various murals/street art in this city! Love the rainbows painted onto the crosswalks in the Castro district ;)

Here's a project I did a few weeks ago, but haven't shared here yet. This is a 5' x 2.5' mural panel that I made on wood, and installed on a client's fence enclosure for her hot tub. The other side of this fence (the side seen by her neighbors and the public) is a larger forest panel I already created for this client (see this older post) Inside her house, is this mural. Happy to have return-business, and grow her little collection of Corie-murals :)

This is an image of Guanyin - the goddess of compassion, celebrated in a variety of cultures (read her Wiki article here) While I admittedly don't know much beyond the little I was able to research about her, I know she means a lot to my client. I was happy to paint my own interpretation of her (probably got a good use of my artistic license here). Glad to provide a visual for helping my client to feel more at peace in her home/outdoor sanctuary area. This one just makes me want to exhaaaaaallllllllle. Ahhhhhhhhh :)

Have a great week you guys!

A Mural at Home

Hey everyone!

Sometimes, you get real busy and caught up in the freelance-hustlin', small-business-growin', money-makin', life, and you just have to stop and throw your parents a frickin' bone.

My parents have my very first mural I ever EVER painted EVER on the wall of their kitchen. I painted this when I was in high school:

I'm embarrassed to show you that, but for the sake of a good blog post, there you have it. Back in the day, my mom had just finished tearing off all our old ugly wallpaper in our kitchen, and she was going to paint it. I remember wanting to try painting a mural SO bad - I was obsessed. My supportive and brave parents let me paint that mural instead of making the kitchen wall a nice, solid color. I also was able to pass it off as a mother's day present, so that was definitely another win for me.

That mural sparked everything for me. I am living my dream of being a muralist now, and I owe everything to that mother's day present, and the parents who let me paint it. My parents would have gatherings and their friends would see the mural in the kitchen, and hire me to paint walls in their houses for $10 an hour. Pretty sweet gig as a high schooler actually (my prices have raised a bit since then). I kept getting jobs sporadically throughout college and afterwards, and slowly built my business, baby step by baby step. #soflippingrateful

Anyway, I've had to look at that mural a LOT over the years. Eventually, after 4 years of gaining skills in art school, I could not ethically let my parents keep it looking like that. I re-painted it to look like this a few years ago:

About a month ago, my parents re-did their countertops, and the countertop people had to plaster over almost all of the orchids on the right. Last weekend, I went to fix the spot, and found a whole lot of other spots I wanted to fix. "Perfectionist" is definitely not a word I would use to describe myself in regular life, or in the way I create art. But this wall is different and special - It's my first. And it's my parent's. They should have something I feel proud of. Here's where I ended up.... finished....for now...
